Step-by-Step Foundation Construction with Bricks: A Contractor's Guide

18 February 20258 min readBBC1 Bricks, Bhuna, Haryana

A well-constructed foundation distributes building load to the soil and prevents settlement, cracking, and structural failure. Here is the sequence used on residential projects across Haryana and Rajasthan.

Step 1: Site Survey and Soil Check

Before excavation, verify:

  • Soil bearing capacity (most residential areas in Haryana: 1.0–1.5 T/m²)
  • Water table depth (important for foundation depth decisions)
  • Property boundary markings and setback requirements

Step 2: Excavation

  • Typical residential foundation depth: 1.0–1.5 metres below ground level
  • Width: For a 9-inch wall, foundation width is typically 2–2.5 feet at the base, stepping in with each course
  • Ensure excavation bottom is level — use a dumpy level or laser level for accuracy
  • Remove loose soil and compact the excavation base

Step 3: PCC (Plain Cement Concrete) Base

A 3–4 inch layer of 1:4:8 or 1:5:10 PCC is laid at the bottom of the excavation:

  • This provides a level, clean surface for brickwork
  • Prevents soil moisture from directly contacting foundation bricks
  • Allow 24 hours curing before starting brickwork

Step 4: Foundation Brickwork

Foundation bricks are laid in 1:4 cement-sand mortar (stronger than wall mortar):

  • Start with the widest course at PCC level, typically 2 bricks wide (18 inches)
  • Each subsequent course steps in by half a brick on each side
  • For a single-storey building: 4–5 courses of stepping, reaching 9-inch wall width at plinth level
  • For two-storey: 6–7 courses with wider base
  • All joints must be fully filled — no gaps or voids in foundation mortar

Step 5: DPC at Plinth Level

At plinth level (150mm above ground level), install a Damp Proof Course:

  • 40mm thick 1:1.5:3 concrete with waterproofing compound
  • This prevents rising damp from entering the building walls above ground

Step 6: Backfill and Compaction

After foundation brickwork reaches plinth level:

  • Backfill excavated area with clean earth in 200mm layers
  • Compact each layer with a plate compactor or manual rammer
  • Do not use construction debris for backfilling — it settles unevenly

Why Foundation Bricks Must Be High Quality

Foundation bricks are permanently buried underground in contact with soil moisture. Low-quality bricks deteriorate over years, causing foundation failure. Use only well-fired Zigzag kiln bricks with water absorption below 16% for foundation work. BBC1 bricks meet this specification consistently.
