In Haryana and Rajasthan, the monsoon window (July to mid-September) coincides with peak construction season. Stopping work entirely is rarely practical. Here are field-tested rules for maintaining quality during rain.
8 Rules for Monsoon Brickwork
1. Cover Fresh Brickwork
Mortar joints need 24–48 hours to reach initial strength. Fresh brickwork exposed to heavy rain gets washed out joints. Cover freshly laid walls with tarpaulin or plastic sheeting immediately after the day's work.
2. Do Not Lay Bricks in Active Rain
Rain dilutes mortar and prevents proper bonding. If rain starts mid-work, stop laying and cover the wall. Resume only when rain stops and surface water has drained.
3. Store Bricks Off the Ground
Stack bricks on a raised platform or wooden pallets. Bricks sitting in standing water for extended periods absorb too much moisture and become difficult to work with. Keep stacks covered with waterproof sheeting.
4. Mix Mortar in Small Batches
High humidity slows mortar drying but doesn't slow the chemical setting reaction. Mix smaller quantities — enough for 30–45 minutes of work. This prevents mortar from setting in the mixing area before use.
5. Check Sand Moisture
Wet sand contains significant water that changes the effective mortar ratio. Before mixing, test sand moisture by squeezing a handful. If water drips out, reduce mixing water proportionally.
6. Maintain Drainage Around Foundation
Water pooling around the foundation erodes exposed plinth brickwork. Ensure site drainage channels are clear and functional before monsoon arrives.
7. Cure Walls Properly
Despite ambient moisture, proper curing is still required. High humidity helps, but curing still needs 7 days of keeping brickwork damp. The monsoon actually assists natural curing — one of the few advantages.
8. Inspect After Heavy Rain
After any significant rainfall, inspect the previous day's brickwork for washed joints, displacement, or cracking. Re-point or re-lay affected sections before continuing upward.
BBC1 Monsoon Delivery
BBC1 coordinates monsoon deliveries to minimise on-site brick exposure. We recommend ordering in phases matched to your weekly laying capacity rather than bulk deliveries during the rainy season.
